About

Mutbak is a small family run independent company based in Salt Lake City, UT.

Birth of Mutbak

Mutbak began in 2015 as I was tired of buying throw-away wallets that used cheap leather or even fake leather which never seemed to last more than a few months. On top of the poor quality, it seemed that every wallet was made with some design decisions that didn’t make too much sense.  I found myself consistently taking scissors and thread to each new wallet I bought in order to make the functionality match my desires. But I was constantly disappointed when the leather would break-down or the dye flaked off and the underlying off-colored leather would shine through. I was sick of spending money on sub-par wallets and could not justify spending a ton of money on a brand-name, so… I decided to make my own.

I made my first wallet using my own design with a consideration on the functionality first and foremost.  I then selected a high-quality Crazy Horse leather to round out “my perfect wallet”. When I was finished I was surprised by the number of people that commented on my wallet and wanted to know where they could buy one.

This was the point where I knew I had hit on a need and that I wasn’t the only one looking for a high-quality long-lasting wallet. I went back to the drawing board and started to design a new wallet with a few features that I felt should have been included in the first one. One of the new features I added was a metallic infused flexible fabric to block RFID/NFC signals.

Soon after the new design was finished our first product a slim front-pocket wallet named Bunker was born.  The Bunker is still being sold and is continually given great reviews with a lot of the reviews commenting on the high-value compared to the low-price – exactly what we were aiming for. But, we are not satisfied with just one model, and since the initial release of the Bunker, we have also released the Citadel – a large passcase leather wallet for those who need a bit more room than what the Bunker provides.  We also have two new models that I expect to release shortly.

Why Mutbak?

I am often asked about the meaning or significance of the word Mutbak… the truth is that there is none, or at least no significance was intended.  Mutbak arose as I was trying to find a name for the company that captured the values and ideals that are incorporated into each one of the wallets made. When searching for a name, I wanted something strong, something that sounded tough. I wanted something that would impart our focus of functionality over appearance.  Don’t get me wrong, I think our wallets are great looking, but that is a byproduct of our focus on functionality.

As I was brainstorming ideas I started combining sounds when I came across Mutbak.  As I mulled the name over it began to grow on me as I feel the word seems to have a militaristic tone.  Something that focuses on strength, durability.  Exactly what I was looking for.  So, I registered the domain and began working on making the wallets as tough as the name.
